Community Room Volunteer

Many of our members live in low-income apartments and single-room occupancy hotels, with no access to common gathering spaces. Our community room and or our outdoor community room can provide them a comfortable space to gather during the day. Come join us and sit down for a game of Skip-Bo, watch a movie, or just chat.

Responsibilities:
  1. Learn members names
  2. Answer members questions
  3. For Outdoor Community Room: helping to transport a wagon filled with folding chairs, water, and snacks
  4. Clean tables, wipe down chairs, and put away supplies in the community room
  5. Check-in Members: asking questions with regards to current health, taking temperatures, and documenting information
  6. Preparing to go snacks and hygiene kits
  7. Engage in games and conversations with members
  8. Relay messages from members for staff
  9. Honor privacy and confidentiality
  10. Other misc. administrative tasks

Qualifications Sought:
  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  2. Be respectful to everyone
  3. Provide a compassionate presence without judgment
  4. Commitment to ending social isolation in Old Town/Downtown Portland.
  5. At least 18 years old
  6. To be in our indoor community room, completed COVID Vaccination/s required, including documentation that this has been completed
Training:
  1. Basic Community Room safety, policies, and practices
Time commitment:
  • Six-month minimum commitment
  • Minimum of 4 volunteer shifts per month (approx. 12 hours)
Volunteer Shift:
  • Indoor Community Room Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 AM – 12 PM
  • Outdoor Community Room Hours (Summers Only): Wednesdays 11 AM – 12:30 PM
