Individual Volunteering

Individual Volunteer Opportunities

The impact Maybelle Center for Community has on Old Town-Downtown Portland would not be possible without the 200 volunteers who help serve our members each year. We have various volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

The Visitation Program was our first program created and continues to be the centerpiece of our work today. We continue to expand our volunteer offerings through various programming we offer our members.

“The Maybelle Center has a great team of very special caring staff and volunteers. We are doing good things. We are making a positive difference in so many lives! In my visits today and in the last couple weeks, all of the people I visit have expressed how very special and cared about . . .   several have chairs positioned, waiting for us each week . . . many now have someone to listen to them, someone to share with. Yes, we are making a difference!” Barbara, Community Volunteer since 2013

Volunteer Opportunities at Maybelle Center

Ongoing Opportunities

  • Become a Home Visitation Volunteer
    • Maybelle Center believes that no one deserves to live in isolation. We act upon this by sending volunteers in pairs to visit volunteers in single room occupancy (SRO) hotels. Visits build trust, promote self-advocacy, and connect members to other services at Maybelle Center and in the community.
      • We need volunteers who have strong interpersonal communication and listening skills; are open and compassionate towards individuals from marginalized populations; are able to commit a minimum of 6 months to a year; and, are available one afternoon a week, Monday through Friday, between 1-4pm
      • We provide a full orientation and training program for volunteers.

Upcoming Opportunities

  • Wildwood in the City: Tuesday, August 30
    • For those who were unable to join us at the Wildwood Recreation Site in July, we hold a special event in our courtyard, complete with games, s’mores, and a petting zoo. We will need help with managing the activity areas the day of.
  • Hope in the Heart of Portland: Friday, September 16 from 4:30 – 10pm
    • Our annual fundraising event is held at the Portland Art Museum, with more than 300 guests in attendance. We will need a number of volunteer roles filled including greeters, registration, raffle/auction sellers, and set-up/clean-up assistance.

Other Opportunities

  • Holiday parties and meals (November and December)
  • Special projects and administrative tasks (as needed)
  • If you have a skill or talent you would like to share and teach others, let us know.
